Cabinet to review RON95 subsidy proposal before rollout next year, says Armizan

PUTRAJAYA: The mechanism on how the targeted RON95 subsidy would be implemented will be brought to the Cabinet before the subsidy programme is rolled out next year, says Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.

The acting Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said that discussions among ministries, including this ministry on how the mechanism would be set were ongoing.

“The mechanism, once we have firmed it up, will be presented to the Cabinet for it to be approved,” he said after launching the Cost of Living Symposium 2023 here on Tuesday (Nov 28).

He however did not say when the proposed mechanism would be brought before the Cabinet.

Armizan said the policy for targeted subsidy for RON95 had already been given the nod.

On Monday (Nov 27), Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli had said that the government would roll out the targeted RON95 subsidy programme in the second half of 2024 to optimise its resources towards those that need it the most.

He said that implementing the subsidy targeting programme by the end of next year would immediately translate to a better fiscal position for the country.

Earlier reports also quoted Rafizi as telling the Dewan Rakyat that targeted subsidies for petrol and diesel are likely to be implemented in 2024 using three mechanisms - individual net disposable income, net disposable household income through social protection or assistance schemes and a combination of household and individual earnings which will be implemented using a subsidies card.
